Rev. Dr. Phil Johnson
Dr. Phil Johnson, Pastor of New Day Church-on-the-Hill, not only is known for his “red shoes” but for the many hats he wears. Pastor Phil is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. New Day’s sister church Exodus is in the Kibera slums in Nairobi, Kenya. There, Pastor Phil is fulfilling the African proverb, “When you pray, move your feet.” He has gone to Nairobi often as he is coordinator of Kibera Kids Kitchen, a feeding program for children, and Executive Director of the Daystar University Global Leadership Center he established in 2008. For his projects in Africa, he was nominated for “The Purpose Prize” in 2009 awarded by Civic Ventures to social entrepreneurs over 60 who are taking on society’s biggest challenges.
Dr. Phil Johnson, founder of Soulwise International, is an inspirational speaker and life and leadership coach to senior corporate and non-profit executives worldwide. With over forty years of experience, his clients that include IBM, Ford, Du Pont, the Million Dollar Round Table and the National Retail Federation report that his work profitably combines solid leadership principles and social responsibility.
He is a master’s gold medal hurdler.
Dr. Phil’s educational background is as varied as his curiosity about life. He holds a Doctorate in leadership and liturgy from the University of Toronto (1979), a Master’s in theology and communication from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario (1969), and a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and Greek from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario (1963). He is also a graduate of the TV Studio Production Course at Ryerson University in Toronto (1986) and the Dispute Resolution Specialist Program at the Institute for Mediation & Arbitration (1995).
Dr. Johnson has published seven books: Soulwise: How to Create a Conspiracy of Hope, Health and Harmony (NanoHouse Press, 2010);Time-Out! Restoring Your Passion for Life, Love and Work (Stoddart, 1992); Celebrating the Seasons with Children (Pilgrim Press, 1984);More Celebrating the Seasons with Children (Pilgrim Press, 1985); And More Celebrating the Seasons with Children (Pilgrim Press, 1986);Goodbye Mom, Goodbye (Welch Publishing, 1987); and The Great Canadian Alphabet Book (Hounslow Press, 1981). He has also written three commissioned musicals and over a hundred articles.
Dr. Johnson teaches communication and critical thinking at the University of Phoenix. In 2006 they awarded him the Outstanding Undergraduate Faculty Member of the Year Award.
